4 Ways to Ensure a Great Dental Experience

Dental patient talking to her dentist

As a dentist, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what makes a dental experience great. Yes, clinical skill is important, but the way you administer treatment is unlikely to be what a patient remembers. Instead, what stands out and matters most is how they felt throughout the process.

My goal is to determine what creates a positive patient experience. Why? With a locally owned practice that is closely tied to Summerfield and its residents, I want what all dentists want: for my patients to keep coming back. This is why I am here to share what I believe makes a difference.

Educating Patients, Not Just Treating Them

Every patient who sits in the dentist’s chair deserves to know what is going on with their oral health. Not only do I share what I am seeing when examining their mouth, but I also explain my treatment recommendation and other available alternatives before a decision is made to move forward, not after. I believe communication is necessary, not a luxury!

Infusing Comfort Throughout the Office

A warm blanket, calming music, and headphones can make a bigger impact than you think. For patients, these comfort amenities can be the deciding factor in whether they choose to come back or visit another dentist’s office. While they do not affect the clinical components of treatment, they certainly make the overall experience less stressful and more inviting.

Consistency From Beginning to End

A patient’s dental experience doesn’t begin when they arrive for their appointment. It actually starts with the multiple interactions they have with team members before sitting in the treatment chair. Were they treated nicely and with respect by the scheduling coordinator? Did this person explain how they can use their dental insurance most effectively? Does the waiting room feel cold or appear dirty? Every observation and interaction can help or hinder a patient’s opinion. This is why consistency is key throughout their visit.

Viewing Dentistry as a Relationship, Not a Transaction

When I think about all of the patients I’ve had over the years, the ones who have been with me the longest are the ones I know the best. I take the time to understand their history and anxieties, as well as what their goals are for their smile. This commitment to building a relationship with my patients allows me to connect with them personally, making it impossible to have a bad experience.

While these methods cannot replace clinical experience, they add another layer that resonates with patients. The technical aspects of dentistry help boost your reputation as a dental professional. Still, everything else builds a solid foundation of trust and personalization that your patients appreciate and ultimately keeps them coming back.
