It may seem like cosmetic dentistry is a distinctly modern thing, but the desire for a beautiful smile is ancient. Cultures across the globe have altered their teeth for beauty and status for thousands of years, sometimes in ways that look nothing like today’s veneers and whitening kits. Continue reading to learn more about these older practices and see how far we’ve come.
Ancient Beginnings
The Etruscans, in what is now Italy, were crafting dentures with gold and animal teeth as early as 700 BC. Around the same time, ancient Egyptians used gold wire to stabilize loose teeth and even fashioned early bridges from ivory.
The Romans took things further (perhaps too far) rinsing with mixtures of cow’s milk and human urine to whiten their smiles. Meanwhile, in Central America, the Maya inlaid teeth with jade and other precious stones, etching small holes for purely decorative purposes.
One of the most striking examples of ancient cosmetic dentistry was the practice of ohaguro, or “black teeth,” in Japan. This was considered a mark of beauty and maturity for centuries, practiced primarily by married women.
While these practices are no longer around, they show that the desire for a more beautiful smile transcends time.
Breakthroughs That Changed Everything
Cosmetic dentistry as we recognize it today began taking shape much later. In the 18th century, French physician Pierre Fauchard, often called the father of modern dentistry, introduced techniques for filling cavities and improving the appearance of teeth.
By the 1800s, porcelain teeth had replaced the ivory and animal-based dentures of earlier centuries, offering a far more natural look. Then, in 1928, California dentist Charles Pincus invented an early version of the porcelain veneer specifically for Hollywood stars. With technology constantly advancing, treatments would begin to get cheaper and more effective as time marched on.
Today’s Golden Age of Smiles
There has truly never been a better time for a great smile than today. Modern materials, digital imaging, and techniques allow dentists to correct nearly any cosmetic issue with precision and predictability that earlier eras couldn’t have imagined. Veneers, teeth whitening, dental implants, clear aligners, and other modern procedures can completely transform your smile without resorting to precious stones or animal bones.
It’s tempting to judge old practices by modern standards, but the technology of today wouldn’t have come without early techniques. If you’re ready to join a long line of smile stylists, reach out to your cosmetic dentist. They’ll help you achieve a grin you can be proud of.
